5 Haircare Hacks for Dry Hair
Does it feel like your hair is bone dry no matter what you do? We’re here to tell you that it's not all in your head! Some hair types don’t readily absorb and hold onto moisture and remain dry and brittle regardless of your hair moisturizing routine. Chronically dry hair is a mountainous struggle, so in this article, we’ll walk you through 5 hacks you can use to keep your hair soft and moisturized.
Switch Over to The LOC Method
Is your regular moisturizing routine just not cutting it for your type three or type four hair? The LOC method is a product layering technique that helps lock in moisture and keep your hair hydrated for days. Although it can leave type one and two hair greasy, it’s perfect for kinky and curly textures.
Here’s how to do the LOC method.
-
Apply a liquid to your freshly washed and conditioned hair. Leave-in conditioner or water works fine.
-
Apply an oil of your choice to seal in the moisture from the liquid.
-
Apply a cream to further lock in the moisture and keep your locs moisturized for days.
Give Your Strands Daily Moisture
Whether you have type one, two, three, or four hair, the only way to treat it is to give it consistent moisture. Keep a spray bottle handy and try spritzing your hair with water every day for a quick dose of hydration. You’ll notice that your hair stays softer and more hydrated for longer.
Try Co-Washing
Since people with type three and four hair don’t have to worry about greasy strands, skip the shampoo once in a while. Traditional shampoo strips your hair of crucial moisture, so instead, wash your hair with a cleansing conditioner (also called co-wash) once or twice weekly. In addition to giving your hair some significant hydration, co-washes cut down on frizz and keep your strands sleek and strong.
Use Heat Wisely
No matter your hair type, heat damage is a major cause of dry hair. To prevent it, limit your use of hot tools like blow dryers and flat irons, and opt for heatless styling methods instead. When using heat, take protective measures like applying a heat protectant first and keeping the temperature low. You’ll have to crank the heat up for type three and four hair, so invest in a high-quality flat iron to minimize damage.
Get Regular Trims
Dry hair breaks easily, so it's usually associated with an increase in split ends. Unfortunately, split ends don’t just stay at the bottom of your strands. If left alone, split ends travel up the shaft of your hair and cause it to snap off near the roots. Trim types one and two hair every four to eight weeks. People with hair types three and four can usually wait around six to eight weeks before a trim. Regular trims stop damage before it ruins the rest of your hair – it also cuts down on tangles for easier styling!
Dry hair is an eyesore and can make growing your hair out feel like it's impossible. Luckily, following the tips that we’ve gone over in this article will help you keep your strands healthy and moisturized. We hope you found exactly what you were looking for and wish you the best of luck in your hair care journey!
