How to Do a Slick Back Bun Featuring Leave-in Conditioner

Getting dolled up for a graduation, date night, or everyday errands/work? A slick back bun is the hairdo you need to look sophisticated and effortlessly chic. But one thing we can’t deny is how hard it can be to get the style right, especially if you don’t use the right hair products. Read on to find out how to do a slick back bun featuring leave-in conditioner.

Step 1: Wash and condition your hair.

Start by washing away excess scalp oil and debris with a quick shampoo. If it’s been a while since your last wash or you’ve got stubborn buildup, use a deep cleansing/clarifying shampoo. Wet your hair down, apply the shampoo (focusing on your roots), and scrub with the pads of your fingers before rinsing. After your hair is clean, apply your conditioner mainly on your mid-lengths and ends for some hydration and protection.

Step 2: Apply your leave-in conditioner.

If you want your slick back bun to be super sleek and easy to create, never skip the leave-in conditioner. Not only does it give your hair a strong dose of hydration, but it makes it softer, more malleable, and easier to detangle. With this product, you won’t have much, if any, trouble getting your hair to lay flat. Spritz your leave-in conditioner spray all over your hair from roots to tips and comb out any tangles with a wide-tooth comb.

Step 3: Slather on some gel.

In addition to your leave-in conditioner, your gel does a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to smoothing down your hair. Slather on some gel, ensuring that the first couple of inches of hair are coated. Not applying enough gel can result in a frizzy result and trouble with the next step. Choose a gel that works for your specific hair type (super hold gels are best for those with textured hair).

Step 4: Smooth your hair back into a ponytail.

Decide how high or low you want your bun to sit. Then, using your comb, direct your hair backward into a ponytail (without securing it). Now, grab your boar bristled brush and smooth any frizzy hairs down. The goal is to get your hair as flat to your head as possible. The more detangled, hydrated, and gel-coated your hair is, the easier this step will be. Once you’ve achieved your desired sleekness, wrap a ponytail holder around the base of the ponytail.

Step 5: Create your bun.

There are several ways to create your bun, but the easiest one is to wrap the length of your hair around the base of the ponytail. If you don’t have enough length or volume to do this, don’t worry. You can also use a hair donut:

·       Pull your hair through the hair donut.

·       Spread your hair out to cover the donut.

·       Wrap an elastic around the hair-covered donut.

·       Tuck any loose ends underneath the donut (use bobby pins for extra security if you want).

And that’s it! You’re all done.
