How To Keep Hair From Tangling

Whether your hair is long and straight or short and curly, nothing is worse than constantly finding knots and tangles in your strands. So, what can you do to prevent it? If you want to find out the answer to that and more, just keep reading! We’ll walk you through a few different ways you can prevent your hair from becoming a tangled mess.

Switch to A Silk or Satin Pillowcase

The way you sleep has a significant impact on how tangled your hair gets during the night. When you sleep on cotton pillowcases, your hair rubs against the rough, porous fabric. When this happens, you can develop tangles and even breakage.

If you switch to a silk or satin pillowcase, your strands will slide against the fabric, giving them less of an opportunity to tangle with neighboring strands. Though wearing something on your head at night may feel like a drag at first, we guarantee you’ll get used to it!

Twist or Braid Your Hair Before Bed

Throwing your hair into a loose braid or twist before you go to sleep is an excellent way to keep tangling under control. When you do it, your strands won’t get intertwined and entangled with each other. And as a bonus, sleeping in braids will give you some gorgeous waves when you wake up! Just make sure you don’t braid your hair too tightly, or it could lead to hair loss and thinning.

Trim Your Ends

The more damaged your hair cuticles are, the more likely it is to develop knots and tangles. If you notice that the majority of your tangles are at the ends of your hair, it's a sign that you desperately need a trim. As the oldest part of your hair, your ends are more likely to be dry and damaged. Even if you take care of your hair correctly, your ends go through so much natural wear and tear that you have to get them trimmed regularly.

Keep Your Hair Moisturized

Dry and damaged strands are far more likely to get tangled than healthy, moisturized hair. If you want to keep your hair from tangling, make sure your hair care regimen is giving your strands all the TLC they need. Keeping your hair hydrated is essential, so here are a few tips for reducing dryness.

  • Do weekly hair masks or deep conditioning treatments.
  • Don’t overwash your hair.
  • Cut down on hot tool styling.
  • Use a gentle shampoo to wash your hair.
  • Use hydrating creams and lotions.
  • Seal your strands with oil.
  • Wash your hair with cool water.
  • Use an intensely hydrating leave-in conditioner every day.

Knots and tangles are incredibly frustrating, but luckily there are steps you can take to prevent them. Just keep your hair healthy and take a few extra precautions to ensure your hair care regimen isn’t doing more harm than good. We hope this article has answered all your questions and taught you how to keep your strands smooth and tangle-free!
