How To Make Your Hair Hold A Curl

Chances are you’re here because you’re tired of spending a ton of time creating beautiful curls, only to have them fall within minutes. This is an all-too-common scenario experienced by people with every hair type. In this article, we will let you know how to make your hair hold a curl.

Prep Your Hair Correctly

If you regularly curl your hair without prepping it beforehand, this could be the reason that your hair won’t hold a curl. When the hair is parched, coated in hair products, full of excess oils, or covered in debris, it won’t hold a curl for long. So, before breaking out the flat iron, or curling iron, you need to ensure that your hair has been adequately prepped. Follow the below hair prep instructions to get your hair ready for a curling session:

  • Wash your hair thoroughly. This doesn’t mean that you should wash your hair with a harsh shampoo. Choose a shampoo formulated with non-sulfate cleansers so that your hair will be clean without being stripped of moisture. Clean hair is less likely to be weighed down.
  • Condition your hair. Once your hair is clean, it’s time to replenish the moisture lost during the shampoo session. Use a conditioner that has moisturizing ingredients.
  • Apply a leave-in conditioner. Immediately after conditioning your hair, apply a lightweight moisturizing leave-in conditioner. If you go with a heavyweight leave-in, it can cause your curls to fall prematurely.
  • Apply a heat protectant. Lightweight heat protectants give your hair the thermal

protection that it needs without making your hair so heavy that it can’t hold a curl.

All of the products that you’ll be leaving in your hair should be lightweight. The more weight that you add to your hair before curling it, the higher the chances that your curls will fall.

Help Your Hair Hold a Curl

In addition to prepping your hair correctly, there are steps that you can take during the styling process to help your hair hold a curl. Let’s look at them below:

  • After passing the flat iron, or curling iron, through your hair, hold the curl in its shape using your hands or rollers. Once the hair cools, you can release the curl. Doing this helps the curls set and last longer.
  • Spray your hair with a holding spray once you’re done styling it. This will help freeze your style into place and hold the curl longer. Hold the can at least 8 inches away from your hair as you spray so that you won’t inadvertently apply too much.
  • Avoid moisture after styling your hair. Once you’ve styled your hair, it’s crucial to avoid moisture at all costs. If your hair comes in contact with moisture, your hair will fall, returning to its normal state. If you live in a humid climate, you may want to try an anti-humidity hair spray.

Now you know several tactics to make your hair hold a curl. We hope that this article helps you create curly styles that last and last!
