How to Manage Unruly Hair

We’ve all dealt with unruly hair at some point – it can be extremely frustrating. Unruly hair is often caused by low oil production, humidity, dryness, and damage from heat styling, hair color, and over-washing. To help reduce the frizz and unmanageability of unruly hair, there are a few things you can try.

Get Regular Trims

Those dry, split, dead ends can work their way up the hair shaft, increasing damage and creating frizz. Regular trims reduce these unruly ends and keep your hair healthy-looking and soft. If you live in an area with high humidity, try a cut with blunt lines to create more weight to keep your strands in place.

Choose the Right Shampoo

To reduce frizz and keep the hair hydrated, you need the right shampoo. When choosing your shampoo, try to avoid formulas that contain alcohol, sulfates, parabens, and other harsh ingredients. Instead, choose one with moisturizing ingredients like glycerin and honey to aid in moisture absorption. You can also reduce how often you shampoo, washing your hair every 2 to 3 days instead of every day. Doing so will minimize hair dryness and frizz, making your hair appear sleeker.

Always Condition

Conditioning closes your hair’s cuticles, trapping in moisture to enhance hair smoothness. Be sure to apply conditioner every time you shampoo your hair, starting at the ends and working your way up to the mid-shaft.

You can also try co-washing your hair once or twice a week instead of using shampoo. This will get rid of the dirt and excess oil without stripping your hair bone dry. You can also try a deep conditioning treatment or hair mask once a week to repair any damage and impart moisture to your thirsty strands.

Add Oil to Your Styling Routine

There are a wide variety of hair oils on the market that have fantastic benefits for your hair. They include nutrients that moisturize, strengthen, and calm unruly strands. You can use hair oils on their own or use styling products formulated with oils to nourish and smooth your strands.

Be Gentle

We tend to rub our hair vigorously after washing it to get rid of excess water, but this friction raises your hair cuticles, causing frizz. Instead, gently squeeze the hair with a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt and then wrap it around your hair to soak up the moisture.

Let your hair air dry until it is damp, and then pull out your blow dryer and finish it off. Keep the heat low and the hairdryer at least 6 inches from the hair to avoid damage. Use a round brush to help shorten the drying time and keep tangles from forming.

Unruly hair can be hard to manage, but you can tackle frizz, dryness, and tangles with the right tips and tricks. A few simple changes to your routine can give you perfect hair that begs to be shown off. We hope that this article is helpful to you in your pursuit of healthy hair care.
