How To Protect Your Hair From The Snow
Snow is a joy to look at, but when it gets in your hair, a bad hair day is never far off. Thankfully, with the right information, you won’t have to deal with the hair issues that snow inevitably brings. In this article, we’ll give you some concrete tips you can use to protect your hair from the snow.
Use a Protective Oil
Before going out in the snow, protect your hair with a thin layer of oil. You can use olive oil, jojoba oil, argan oil, or any other oil you want. Apply the oil either right after conditioning your hair or after styling. Just be sure not to apply so much that it weighs your hair down or makes it look greasy - this tip is especially important for people with thin or fine hair. The oil will act as a barrier against the cold and moisture that snow brings. Without a significant barrier against moisture, the snow can melt onto your hair and cause it to frizz.
Cover Your Head Up
Another great way to protect your hair from snow is to simply cover it up. Here are some of the best ways to do it:
- Wear a large hood and tuck your hair up under it. Take your time to make sure that every strand is tucked in.
- Put on a silk or satin scarf while you’re out and remove it once you’re indoors. This will work in the short term, but if you’re wearing a scarf for hours in the snow, the scarf may eventually become drenched due to snow accumulation.
- Wear a hat large enough to cover all of your hair. Bucket hats, slouchy beanies, or any other large hats will work fine.
Wear the Right Hairstyle
When it’s snowing out, you’ll want to keep your hairstyle as low-profile as possible. This means that long cascading curls or tall, voluminous hairstyles that won’t fit under a hat are a no-no. Instead, opt for hairstyles that can be easily shielded from the snow, like a low bun, low ponytail, or straight back braids. When you’re wearing the right hairstyle, shielding it from the snow will be easy.
Dust the Snow Off Immediately
If all else fails and you’re unable to keep the snow out of your hair, be careful to quickly dust off any snow that happens to land on your head. If you do so, the chances of it ruining your hair will be slim. Of course, this will only work in light snow flurries - not in winter storms.
Manage Your Expectations
It’s extremely important to keep realistic expectations when you're out on a snowy day. For example, if it’s snowing out and you’ve only got a hood on, chances are you’ll end up with some frizziness on the exposed areas of your hair. However, if you follow all of the tips in this article at once, your chances of enjoying a good hair day in the snow will be greatly increased. Good luck with your hair this winter!
